Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah, is an American rapper singer. Her career as a musician actor, filmmaker and TV performer has garnered her two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also was awarded a Grammy Award and six other Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah is an Newark New Jersey native. Her parents were Lancelot Sr. who was a policeman, as well as Rita instructor in Irvington High School. The couple divorced when Latifah was age of ten. Latifah was raised in the Baptist church and she attended Catholic schools at Newark New Jersey. Latifah was the stage name she used before she reached the age of eight. It means very delicate in Arabic. Latifah is a very tall 5'10 girl who was on the high school basketball team. She performed the hit song home from The Wiz at a performance in high school. Latifah was the first to begin beatboxing for Ladies Fresh. Latifah used to be a part of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers that united around the producer DJ Mark the 45 king. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the45King) recorded a demo for Queen Latifah rapper Princess of the Posse. The song was sent to host Yo! MTV Raps, Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music signed Latifah after hearing the song. The singer released her debut single Wrath of My Madness, in the year 1988.
